Griffin Technology 4030-ROAD RoadTrip FM Transmitter & Auto Charger and Cradle for iPod Review

The joys of vacation travel on I-5 from the SF Bay Area to LA and San Diego and back are very few. Soon after leaving civilization as we know it – the FM stations fade and then all too soon the AM stations turn to static. Even with a 6 CD changer – the songs get old before the trip is done.

Our last trip went very well using the ROADTRIP thru my wife’s Toyota RAV4 FM radio. Extension arm adjustments were minimal for my older 20Gig Photo iPod which had a perfect fit in the mounting bracket and after hunting for a station free FM address – the sound quality was more than acceptable. I run the course from 60’s rock to the Three Tenors and found the sound more than acceptable across the spectrum of my music. After running the RoadTrip thru the Bose system on my Infiniti G35 sport coupe – I decided it was time to order a second unit. Our other iPod is a 3rd Generation Touch. The cradle systems holds this one firmly as well.

The FM transmitter resists most low level FM broadcasts – and even most power lines – but when its overpowered by a local FM station – its time to go hunting again.

The extension arms are easily adjustable – but its easy to lose the hex nut on the extension unit if you loosen it too much. Oops! There is vibration motion from the road surface through the extension arms into the heavier 20 gig iPod that is very visable. Much less so in the lighter iPod Touch.

As both our cars are due for replacement sooner than later – these units will do until new(er) cars with built in iPod connections grace our driveway.

Can’t fault anything for the price. It’s been a good experience.
